Demand for eco homes is on the up!
Potential UK home buyers want to purchase an environmentally friendly home and the majority are willing to pay more to do so, according to a new study.
82% of home buyers want a home that allows them to achieve greener living while 3% want to go green.
The research by Redrow has demonstrated that consumer demand for greener living may not be as limited as it is often considered.
Participants of the survey ranked lower energy bills as more important than a garden, parking space, amenities, aesthetics of the home and fittings and appliances, when choosing a home.
More than 25% were willing to pay at least a 6% premium for a home with sustainable features.
78% agreed that the purchase of a sustainable home was likely to have a positive environmental impact and more than two thirds believed that important people in their lives would approve of the decision to buy a greener home.
The research suggests that constructing more environmentally friendly properties could be the way forward as 60% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that they would be more likely to buy a new home from a company building sustainable homes.
However, while 65% of home buyers said they were confident an ‘eco-home’ would save them money and 65% said it would make a more comfortable home, 25% revealed they thought it would be difficult to buy this type of house.
“Our findings challenge the long claimed, but previously under researched, belief that there is limited customer demand for sustainable homes,” said Redrow Homes' sustainability manager Nicola Johansen.
“This helps us build on our knowledge of what our customers are looking for from their home so we can provide them with the relevant information to inform their purchasing decisions,” said Johansen.
